Defne Suman was born in Istanbul, and has travelled the world, teaching, studying and writing in Thailand, Laos, the USA and today Athens. The Silence of Scheherazade was first published in Turkey and Greece in 2016, and in English in 2021, translated by Betsy Göksel. Told through the intertwining fates of a Levantine, Greek, Turkish and Armenian family, set in the Aegean city of Smyrna, it’s a novel about a city and culture lost to time.
